What?

Undergraduate Pathway in Mathematics

Students can enter at Stage 1 (University Foundation) and are guaranteed progression to the first year of a relevant degree, providing that progression criteria are met. Stage 1 takes place in ICP using dedicated lecturers and benefit from small class sizes.

Why?

  • The University of Portsmouth was assessed as being joint 1st in the UK in the most recent RAE exercise (2008).
  • The Guardian Complete University Guide (2009) ranks the University of Portsmouth as 4th in the UK with only the Universities of Cambridge, Durham and Oxford being ranked higher.

Mathematics has a long and distinguished history at the University of Portsmouth, having been one of the first subjects to be taught as far back as the late 1800s. In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, 75% of the research in Applied Mathematics at Portsmouth was deemed to be world-leading or internationally excellent and judged to be either in 4*or 3* categories. This 4*+ 3* score is the best in the UK, and is matched only by the universities of Cambridge, Durham and Oxford.

A degree in mathematics can lead to various career paths, so if you love mathematics but are unsure of your chosen future career, these pathways will provide you with the skills to turn your hand to many different professions within modern commerce and industry.

These pathways also aim to develop your theoretical understanding as well as practical, analytical and computing skills as a foundation for developing applied mathematical solutions.

You will learn advanced problem-solving skills, which can be applied in numerous ways in an extensive choice of potential careers. Mathematicians are warmly welcomed in industry, business and commerce for their analytical ability and systematic, logical approach to unraveling complex issues.
